Caliphate Slavery

A Left Hemisphere Cruelty

Caliphate Slavery

By Khaled Salih

A recent description of the Muslim Caliphate Slavery system in “The Erased Horrors of Islamic Caliphate Slavery,” presents a chilling historical account that resonates strongly with Iain McGilchrist’s concept of “Left Hemisphere Capture” as detailed in his works McGilchrist 2018, McGilchrist 2019, and McGilchrist 2021. McGilchrist posits that problems arise when the left hemisphere (LH), which is adept at handling abstractions, categories, and parts, usurps the role of the right hemisphere (RH), which understands wholes, context, and lived experience . The Caliphate system appears to embody many of the negative consequences of such LH dominance.

Main Elements of the Slavery System:

The Muslim Caliphate slavery system, unlike the Atlantic slave trade which was primarily focused on agricultural labor, had “much darker purposes” and was designed to “consume humans like fuel” rather than to build families and communities.

Key elements

Vast scale and duration. It spanned 1,400 years, affecting 11 to 17 million Africans enslaved (with most dying before reaching their destination), and potentially over 100 million lives destroyed when accounting for all forms of subjugation and associated deaths.

Systematic and bureaucratic operation. It was a calculated system with written selection criteria, detailed business records, and even insurance policies for slave caravans. Government departments managed the slave trade, tax revenues were calculated on human sales, and military campaigns were designed to capture slaves.

High mortality rates. Various aspects of the system had extremely high death tolls, distinguishing it from other historical forms of slavery.

Legal justification and loopholes. Muslim jurists provided legal justifications for taking non-Muslim children and for practices like castration, often employing “circular logic” or having Christians and Jews perform forbidden procedures.

Economic profitability. Despite high mortality rates, the profit margins on enslaved and mutilated individuals made the system economically viable.

Focus on erasing identity and lineage. The system systematically destroyed identities, prevented reproduction, and ensured that victims would leave virtually no descendants to remember their suffering or demand justice.

Variations and Improvements

The system evolved over centuries, with different “branches” specializing in specific forms of human destruction and exploitation:

The Devshirme System (Child Theft)

For over 600 years, Christian families across the Balkans were forced to hand over their boys, typically aged 8 to 18, to Ottoman officials. These boys were “dragged from their homes and lined up... like cattle”. Officials sought the “healthiest, strongest, most intelligent boys” and checked family histories for hereditary diseases. This was “systematic, scientific selection” aimed at “breeding a warrior class from stolen children” [6]. The children underwent a rigorous conversion process involving isolation, re-education (Islamic instruction, Turkish language immersion, military training), and the complete erasure of their old identity. They were given new names and forbidden from speaking native languages. These reprogrammed children became the Janissary Corps, an elite military unit, and administrators within the Ottoman Empire. Some, like Sakolu Memed Pasha, rose to high power and even commanded armies against their homelands. The system was codified into law under Murad I, showcasing its institutionalization [6]. Historians estimate between 200,000 and 500,000 boys were taken through Devshirme.

The castration industry.

This involved the mutilation of hundreds of thousands of men and boys to create eunuchs. Operations centers, like the Aswan Operation Center in Egypt, were industrial facilities processing 3,000 to 5,000 victims annually using crude methods. This practice had an astonishing 90% mortality rate during or immediately after the procedure. From capture to recovery, the total survival rate was as low as 6 to 7%, meaning a 93 to 94% mortality rate. Mass burial sites confirm the high death toll [30]. Castration served multiple purposes. It prevented reproduction, created total dependency on masters, and was a form of physical and psychological control. Eunuchs were considered safe around women, making them valuable for harem supervision, palace administration, and even mosque employment. The system was economically driven; despite the high death rate, the profit margins on survivors (who commanded higher prices) made it worthwhile. Operators deliberately used crude methods, as “high mortality rates made survivors more valuable”. Detailed business records and insurance policies highlight the industrialized nature of this horror. Five to eight million men and boys were subjected to this procedure over centuries, resulting in 4.5 to 7.2 million deaths.

The Trans-Sahara and Other Slave Trades (male)

This involved forced marches across vast deserts, such as the 20 documented Trans-Sahara routes. The death rate during these crossings averaged 80% . Ottoman records even listed “acceptable losses” for different routes, such as 85% for the Chad to Tripoli route. Archaeological evidence includes chains of skeletons along ancient routes. These men were often destined for military service or the castration process. An estimated 11 to 17 million Africans were enslaved through these routes.

Sexual Slavery (female)

This was “pure systematic dehumanization on an industrial scale,” involving the systematic rape of women as state policy, regulated by law and organized by bureaucracy. Major hubs like the Crimean slave port of Caffa processed 20,000 women annually.

70% of slaves were under 18, with a gender ratio of two females for every male, indicating a demand for purposes beyond labor [33]. Peak value for women was 14 to 16 years old.

85% of women sold through Caffa went to harems, with others becoming domestic slaves. The market had specific preferences, such as Circassian women being “the gold standard” for beauty [36]. Procurement invoices and records from places like Topkapi Palace document the purchase of “human beings for sexual abuse”. The legal framework was disturbingly precise, allowing owners unlimited sexual access and claiming ownership of children born to slaves [20]. The system was organized with “safe houses along routes, corrupt officials providing papers, medical inspections to verify virginity.

Conservative estimates suggest 10 to 15 million women were enslaved specifically for sexual purposes over 14 centuries, with 1.5 million women in the Ottoman Empire alone.

McGilchrist’s Left Hemisphere Capture

Now in order to get better sense of this cruel and systematic Caliphate slavery system, McGilchrist’s ideas and approach called Left Hemisphere Capture, LHC, might shed some like on the people, the system, the values, and the purpose of this unique slavery system that is almost neglected in the public debate.

Systematicity, bureaucracy, and quantification

Left Hemisphere (LH) tendency.

McGilchrist offers a fundamental thesis that the two cerebral hemispheres of the human brain have evolved to offer two fundamentally different, yet complementary, ways of attending to the world. These are not merely differences in function but represent two individually coherent, but incompatible, aspects of the world [4]. His work is an “extraordinary scope and subtlety of analysis” that “integrates neuroscience with the humanities, the internal with the external”, suggesting that these neurological differences profoundly influence not just individual perception but also cultural and ideological “mind-sets.”

The left hemisphere thrives on explicit, systematic organization and reduces complex realities to quantifiable data. It prefers precision and fixed categories.

Caliphate system fit.

The slavery system described as the “most comprehensive system of human subjugation ever devised,” operating with “actual business models,” “detailed business records,” and “spreadsheets of suffering”. Practices like the castration industry processed 3,000 to 5,000 victims annually, with “actual price lists” and “insurance policies on slave caravans” listing “inventory loss as a standard business expense”. This reduction of human beings to calculable commodities and the meticulous record-keeping of suffering reflects a profound LH-driven, mechanistic approach to life. The calculation of “acceptable losses” for slave routes, such as 85% expected mortality for the Chad to Tripoli route, further exemplifies this cold, quantitative mindset.

Manipulation and Control

LH tendency

The left hemisphere’s knowledge is geared towards manipulation and control. It seeks to master the world and reduce everything to its utility.

Caliphate system fit

The Devshirme system of child theft aimed to “reprogram” stolen boys, turning them into soldiers or officials who would then wage war on their own homelands. The economic warfare of the Jizya and Karage tax systems was a “masterpiece of calculated cruelty” designed to “make resistance mathematically impossible” and “purchase conversions”. This shows a deliberate, strategic manipulation of individuals and societies to achieve specific outcomes of control and domination, characteristic of LH function.

Abstraction and Dehumanization

LH tendency.

The LH abstracts from living particulars, dealing with things that are “known, fixed, static, isolated, decontextualized, explicit, disembodied, general”. It can reduce individuals to interchangeable parts of a system.

Caliphate system fit

Slaves were referred to as “inventory”, and millions of women were trafficked for sexual slavery, their “names erased,” and their lives “reduced to entries in ledgers”. This stripping away of individual identity and reducing human beings to abstract categories aligns perfectly with the LH's tendency to objectify and reify in order to control. The system “consumed humans like fuel”, reflecting a view of people as mechanistic components rather than living beings.

Disconnection from Lived Reality and Context

LH tendency

The left hemisphere’s world is “virtual, bloodless” and “parasitic” on the right [33]. It can be “disconnected as far as possible from the demands of the body”. It often disregards context.

Caliphate System Fit: The system’s operation involved a profound detachment from the immense human suffering it inflicted. Tax collectors documented the deaths of children from malnutrition as simply a “reduced by future projections”, indicating a cold, statistical view devoid of empathy. This “banality of evil” reflects a world where the intricate, embodied reality of suffering is ignored in favor of abstract, quantifiable outcomes, much like the LH’s preference for its “theory about reality” over reality itself.

Lack of Awareness of Limitations and Hubris

LH tendency

The left hemisphere is often “unaware of what it is missing” and “expert at pretending that it does” understand, even when finding “bogus explanations for the evidence that does not fit its version of events”. This “ignorance of ignorance” can lead to overconfidence.

Caliphate System Fit

The “circular logic” used to justify the Devshirme system (protection “from the empire itself”) demonstrates the LH’s capacity for self-validating, closed-system reasoning, where internal consistency is prioritized over external reality. The historical silence and denial surrounding this horrific system, despite extensive documentation, exemplify the LH's ability to dismiss what does not fit its established narrative, pretending to know even when deeply ignorant.

Suppression of Alternative Narratives and Memory (Cultural Genocide)

LH tendency

The LH’s pursuit of its dominance can lead to a “tyrannical” suppression and destruction of anything that challenges its “supremacy,” including art, religion, and the body. It prefers “certainties” and “linear structures” over ambiguity and multifaceted truths.

Caliphate system fit

The system aimed at “cultural annihilation,” erasing languages that had existed since the pyramids were built, and ensuring that millions of victims had “virtually no descendants”. The very point of this “perfect crime” was to “destroy the victims so completely that no one remains to demand justice”. This deliberate elimination of living memory and the sources of holistic, embodied understanding (the RH’s domain) is a direct manifestation of the LH’s drive to silence anything that might contradict its constructed reality and maintain its control over the narrative of “truth”. The academic and media silence surrounding this history is a contemporary extension of this historical suppression.

In conclusion, the details of the Muslim Caliphate Slavery system, as presented in the source, paint a vivid picture of a society where the instrumental, fragmenting, and controlling tendencies of the left hemisphere appear to have achieved a devastating dominance. This historical “nightmare” serves as a powerful illustration of McGilchrist’s warning that when the left hemisphere, “a wonderful servant,” becomes “a very poor master,” it can lead to a “sterile fantasy” that displaces and destroys the “vibrant, living, profoundly creative world”. The system’s bureaucratic efficiency in human destruction and its systematic erasure of memory represent an extreme manifestation of the LH’s propensity to impose its limited, abstract model onto reality, with horrific consequences.
