Ahmed al-Shara’s Compliance Trap for the Kurds in Syria
17 January 2026

Let us dispense, at once, with the usual superstitions of “goodwill statements” and “historic overtures.” Ahmed al-Shara’s statement is not a poem, not a promise, and certainly not an olive branch. It is a calculated artefact: a biological signal and a memetic construct engineered to elicit a particular behavioural outcome—submission—while wearing the borrowed costume of reconciliation.
A crucial boundary must be nailed down before the reader is invited any further: this analysis concerns al-Shara’s statement—his rhetoric, his sequencing, his implied hierarchy—only. It is not an analysis of any separate decree in which he purports to “grant” Kurds basic rights. One does not “grant” rights in a civilised order; one is bound by them. What can be bestowed can be withdrawn, and that is precisely the point.
In A nutshell
Read through the “Alien Observer” lens, al-Shara is not behaving like a statesman at all. He is behaving like a competitor attempting to neutralise a rival group without paying the price of open conflict immediately—hacking the designated enemy’s evolutionary software. He begins by invoking a cosmic dominance structure—what I call the Big God Module—to make dissent feel not merely political, but metaphysical. He then simulates kinship with the “Saladin gambit,” an appeal designed to trick Kurdish instincts into confusing a rival for a brother. And then, with the candour of the mugger who calls his demand a “deal,” he delivers the crux: return safe and sound—except, of course, for the small matter of laying down arms.
This is the structure of the compliance trap: ancient levers, sanctified language, and a one-way transaction in which vulnerability is demanded upfront and safety is promised later—on trust, on faith, on the ruler’s self-certified benevolence.
A Bird’s-Eye
This is a ruthless, bird’s-eye dissection of Ahmed al-Shara’s statement, analysed through a set of particular frameworks. I shall treat this text not as a political olive branch, but as a biological signal and a memetic construct designed to engineer a specific behavioural outcome.
I am anxious and deeply worried regarding the cosmic hierarchy expressed in his statement, which might turn out entirely well-founded. When scrutinised through my frameworks, this statement reveals itself as a mechanism of control, utilising ancient evolutionary levers and anti-rational epistemologies to subdue a competing group.
The Alien Observer: Detecting Biological Manipulation
If we view this statement through the lens of the “Alien Observer,” al-Shara is not a statesman; he is a biological competitor attempting to neutralise a rival tribe (the Kurds) without expending the calories required for physical warfare as this stage. He is hacking their evolutionary software.
1. Hijacking the Big God Module. al-Shara opens immediately with the cosmic hierarchy we all should fear: “In the name of Allah... Verily the most honoured of you... is the most pious”.
- The Mechanism: The Alien Observer notes that belief in Big Gods—powerful, moralising, supernatural beings—evolved to foster “unnaturally high levels of cooperation in unnaturally large societies.”
- The Trap: By invoking this Big God, al-Shara is attempting to override the Kurds’ evolved “in-group preference” (tribalism). He is signalling that there is a Super-Alpha (allāh) watching them. If they disobey al-Shara’s statement, they are not just fighting a political rival; they are defying the ultimate cosmic dominance hierarchy, created by allāh and now delegated to al-Shara to enforce it. It is a psychological trick to bypass the “face-to-face social instincts” that would normally warn the Kurds not to trust an outsider.
2. Simulated Kinship. (The Saladin Gambit) al-Shara addresses the Kurds as “descendants of Saladin”.
- The Manipulation: This is a lethal use of Kin Selection mimicry. Humans are evolved to practise “nepotism,” favouring those with shared genes. Saladin is a historical hero shared by Islamic history and Kurdish ethnicity.
- The Alien Verdict: al-Shara is attempting to trigger the Kurds’ “kin altruism.” By claiming a shared ancestor (spiritual or historical), he is trying to trick their “gene-machine” programming into treating him as a “brother” rather than a competitor and impose of a cosmic order for which he is now the enforcer. It is an attempt to induce “suicidal empathy,” persuading the Kurds to lower their defences against a genetic competitor by appealing to a fictive kinship.
From the cold, evolutionary vantage of the Alien Observer, al-Shara’s specific invocation of “our people” is not a linguistic olive branch but a territorial marker indicating predatory absorption. In the natural world, possessive pronouns are reserved for offspring or property, not sovereign equals; thus, al-Shara is engaging in Kinship Mimicry, a biological hack designed to trigger the Kurds’ evolved nepotistic instincts and induce a state of “suicidal empathy.” By linguistically reclassifying a rival group as a subset of his own, he appoints himself the Surrogate Decision-Maker, effectively stripping them of independent agency and transforming the interaction from an Infinite Game of negotiation between partners into a Finite Game of submission. The statement offers the illusion of a familial embrace, but biologically, it signals the consumption of the smaller organism by the larger; limbs, after all, do not negotiate with the head.
3. The Demand for Evolutionary Suicide. The crux of the statement is this condition: “return safe and sound... without condition or restriction except laying down arms.”
- The Danger: From an evolutionary standpoint, asking a rival group to voluntarily disarm in a hostile environment is asking them to remove their primary survival adaptation. The Alien would view this as a request for submission disguised as “inclusion.”
- The Paradox: al-Shara promises safety after they disarm. However, the Alien knows that “survival of the fittest” dictates that once the rival is disarmoured, the dominant group has no evolutionary incentive to maintain the peace.
Anatomy of an Anti-Rational Memeplex
Using my Analyst’s Toolkit, we can strip away the rhetoric to reveal the Anti-Rational machinery at work. al-Shara is building a “memetic prison.”
1. The Pursuit of Cosmic Justice. al-Shara claims: “allāh has raised righteousness and piety at the expense of belonging.”
- The Flaw: This is the quintessential definition of Cosmic Justice. al-Shara is asserting that he (and his allāh) can judge the “souls” of men (piety) rather than their observable actions or legal standing.
- The Consequence: As Thomas Sowell warns, seeking Cosmic Justice requires “surrogate decision-makers.” al-Shara is appointing himself the Surrogate. He decides who is “pious” and who is “evil.” This allows him to ignore Traditional Justice (impartial processes) in favour of a system where rights are granted based on his subjective assessment of the Kurds’ spiritual compliance.
2. The Binary Trap (Dichotomy). al-Shara states: “Whoever touches you with evil is our enemy until Judgment Day.”
- The NLP Tactic: This is a Dichotomy. It creates a false binary: “You are either with me (and safe), or you are with the agents of evil.”
- The Double-Bind: It forces the Kurds into a Double-Bind. If they reject his statement, they are implicitly siding with “evil.” It shuts down critical inquiry into why they must disarm, framing resistance as moral failing rather than political caution.
3. The Finite Game. al-Shara invites them to “participate effectively in building this nation.”
- The Analysis: This is a Finite Game played to reach a static end-state (a unified Syria under al-Shara). He treats the Kurds not as players in an Infinite Game of continuing life and negotiation, but as pieces to be placed on the board to complete his victory. Once the “unity” is achieved (the game is won), their utility—and their leverage—vanishes.
The Deutschian Critique: Truth vs. Authority
Finally, applying David Deutsch’s philosophy reveals the epistemological rot at the core of this statement.
1. Belief as a Misleading Category. al-Shara’s entire argument rests on belief: belief in allāh, belief in piety, belief in his benevolence.
- The Critique: Deutsch argues that belief is a “misleading category.” al-Shara offers no explanation for how these rights will be protected. He offers no mechanism for error correction. He relies entirely on the authority of his faith.
- The Risk: Without an explanatory theory of how the Kurds will be safe (institutional checks and balances), al-Shara is asking them to rely on “casual uncertainty”—a gamble where the cost of being wrong is extinction.
2. Prediction and the Unpredictability of Human Behaviour. al-Shara implies that if the Kurds disarm, the result will be safety and reconstruction.
- The Critique: This assumes he can predict the future knowledge and behaviour of his own security forces and the Kurds. Deutsch reminds us that “human behaviour... is inherently unpredictable.” al-Shara’s confidence is a “false theory of belief and probability.” He is extrapolating a happy ending from a volatile complex system. A rational actor must assume that “new knowledge” (e.g., a future coup, a change in al-Shara’s mood) could render this promise void instantly.
3. Statements vs. Truth al-Shara calls this a “National Covenant”.
- The Critique: This is merely a “Statement” (a fallible, physical utterance), yet al-Shara presents it as a Proposition (an abstract, perfect truth). He conflates his political statement with Divine Will. By wrapping his words in the language of the qur’ān, he attempts to elevate a fallible human policy to the status of objective, unchallengeable Truth.

The Verdict: A Warning
By now we have arrived at a ruthless assessment. Here it is:
This statement is a Compliance Trap.
- It is biologically manipulative: It uses the Big God meme to suppress the Kurds’ survival instinct (tribal defence).
- It is anti-rational: It replaces Traditional Justice (rights based on law) with Cosmic Justice (rights based on “piety” as defined by the leader).
- It is epistemologically bankrupt: It demands action based on faith rather than explanation, denying the unpredictability of future threats.
The Pitfall: The greatest deception here is the Cosmic Manmade hierarchy anyone can note. al-Shara places himself as the gatekeeper between the Kurds and their rights, and between the Kurds and allāh. By accepting this statement, the Kurds would not be gaining rights; they would be submitting to a surrogate decision-maker who holds the power to revoke those rights the moment he decides they are no longer pious or descendants of Saladin.
It is, in the language of my frameworks, a memetic virus designed to disable the immune system of the host (the Kurds) so that the dominant organism (al-Shara’s regime) can absorb them. We need to be tremendously worried.

The Statement in English
In the name of allāh, the most gracious, the most merciful
allāh almighty said: “And we have made you into peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of allāh is the most righteous of you.”
Indeed, allāh has elevated righteousness and piety above affiliation. By allāh, there is no superiority for an Arab, a Kurd, a Turk, or anyone else except through the fear of allāh and the righteousness of the individual, regardless of their people.
O our Kurdish people, O descendants of Salah al-Din, beware of believing the narrative that we wish harm upon our Kurdish people. By allāh, whoever harms you is our enemy until the Day of Judgment. Your life is our life.
We seek only the well-being of the country and its people, development, reconstruction, and the unity of the country—and let no one miss out on their share of this goodness.
I am honoured today to issue a special decree for our Kurdish people that guarantees their rights and certain specificities by the text of the law.
I urge everyone who was forcibly displaced from their land to return safely and securely without any condition or restriction except laying down arms. I call upon you to actively participate in building this homeland, preserving its safety and unity, and to reject anything otherwise.
And allāh is the granter of success.
